I-1491 made Extreme Risk Protections Orders (ERPOs) the law of the land in Washington State. ERPOs allow law-enforcement officers, family members and others to ask a judge to keep firearms out of the hands of someone deemed a danger to themselves or others.

The citizen sponsor of the Initiative was Marilyn Balcerak whose son — who had autism and struggled with depression — killed his stepsister and then himself in 2015.

It passed with 71% of the vote in 2016 and was endorsed by:
