Alliance for Gun Responsibility Responds to Primary Election Results
Alliance CEO Renee Hopkins call results an “orange wave” for gun responsibility
SEATTLE, WA — The Alliance for Gun Responsibility is celebrating the results of the August 7, 2018 primary. This year, the Alliance for Gun Responsibility endorsed 65 candidates for the Washington State Legislature. 60 of these endorsed candidates are currently leading in their race; each of the other five candidates is currently in position to advance to the general election. The bipartisan endorsed legislative candidates are from districts across the state, including the 6th, 19th, and 28th Legislative Districts.
Additionally, long-time opponents of responsible gun laws, like Representatives David Taylor of the 15th Legislative District and Matt Shea of the 4th Legislative District, are struggling to make it through their primaries or are performing worse than prior years.
“Year after year, Washingtonians have clearly called for responsible gun laws,” said Alliance for Gun Responsibility CEO Renee Hopkins. “Tuesday was an ‘orange wave’ and the results are more evidence that voters in our state are tired of inaction on the issue in Olympia and in the other Washington. It’s time for all of our electeds to heed the will of their constituents and pass laws that will save lives.”
“The Alliance for Gun Responsibility Victory Fund has grown from endorsing only few candidates just four years ago, to supporting dozens of candidates this year because more and more candidates understand that earning our endorsement sends the right message to voters,” said Alliance Victory Fund Director Stephanie Ervin. “We expect the vast majority of our endorsed candidates this year to win for that reason and when elected, to fight in office to make our communities more safer.”
The Alliance also endorsed nine Congressional candidates. Seven of those candidates are currently leading; additionally, Lisa Brown is within 600 votes of seven-term incumbent Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Carolyn Long is outperforming expectations against 3rd Congressional District Rep. Jamie Herrera Beutler. Further, the Alliance endorsed two candidates for county prosecutor, Dan Satterberg in King County and Adam Cornell in Snohomish County, both of whom will advance to the general election.
