The Alliance For Gun Responsibility Responds To Nomination Of Judge Amy Coney Barrett To The U.S. Supreme Court

SEATTLE, WA – The Alliance for Gun Responsibility issued the following statement in response to news that President Trump has nominated Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court.

“The Senate must honor Justice Ginsburg’s last wish that she not be replaced until the next president is installed,” said Renée Hopkins, CEO of the Alliance for Gun Responsibility. “The American people deserve to have a say in who nominates our next Supreme Court Justice. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell famously espoused that principle when he blocked the nomination of Merrick Garland for 237 days before the last presidential election. Now, with voting already underway in the 2020 presidential election, he must follow his own rule.

The Supreme Court has enormous power to shape the future of our country, including by upholding or undermining laws passed directly by voters, like Initiative 1639. Voters deserve to have a say in the future of the court. As our communities confront the challenges of the coronavirus, economic turmoil, and continued gun violence and police brutality, our elected officials should put craven political games aside and build on Justice Ginsburg’s legacy of fighting for a more inclusive and just country.”
