Yakima Herald-Republic: Advocates Make Case for New Gun Law

The Yakima Herald-Republic writes on Initiative 1491:

The initiative would allow family members or police to petition a court to temporarily suspend a person’s access to firearms. If they can prove a person poses a threat to themselves or others, a judge could issue an extreme risk protection order requiring that person to surrender their guns to police and not buy, sell or possess other firearms for up to one year.

Critics of the measure say it unfairly places the burden on the accused to prove innocence instead of the petitioner having to prove guilt and that it violates the right of due process.

The National Rifle Association is urging voters to vote no on the initiative.

The Alliance for Gun Responsibility says it is working to end gun violence crises and promote a culture of gun ownership that balances rights with responsibilities.
