Position Title: Digital Communications Intern

Reports to: Digital Communications Manager 

Job Summary: Our Communications Internship will take place during the tail end of 2024 and Washington’s 2025 Legislative Session – ending in late April. The individual in this role will support the Communications department in developing and implementing digital campaigns across multiple platforms to boost brand engagement and increase understanding of common-sense gun violence solutions. This position will heavily focus on our social media presence by collaborating with the Digital Communications Manager on strategy, creation, and scheduling of content. The Digital Communications Intern will be able to utilize digital communication strategies and tactics to expand upon our public health voice and presence and will work closely with the team to make timely content that meets current and evolving needs in gun violence prevention.

If approved by your institution, this internship can count as course credit. Interns commit to 15-20 hours each week during their experience. The schedule is adaptable and subject to change depending on organizing or community events. While we are accommodating of work or school schedules, in-person participation is necessary during certain parts of the program and should be considered when applying. Occasional evening and weekend shifts may also be necessary.

Responsibilities: 

  • Center principles of equity, inclusion, and belonging in all work, embedding the values in communication development, policy application, and organizational practices and processes.
  • Help create and edit short-form videos for social media
  • Occasionally travel to events to capture content
  • Brainstorm and research ideas for original content
  • Assist in graphic design creation for digital content
  • Track social media engagement to identify high-performing ideas and campaigns for scalability alongside our Digital Communications Manager
  • Assist in the day-to-day functions of the Communications department, including writing engaging, fact-checked internal and external-facing materials such as social media posts, blogs, newsletters, and media advisories
  • Monitor news and media trends, including tracking press clips
  • Ensure the brand message is consistent
  • Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned

Qualifications: 

  • Previous internship or work experience in the following areas is strongly preferred: communication, content strategy, marketing, journalism, public relations, political science
  • Well-versed in social media trends and content creation
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Awareness of data privacy best practices for handling sensitive information
  • Familiarity with tools like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or Canva for creating simple graphics, banners, and visual content
  • Strong desire to be a key team contributor
  • Self-motivated, creative, dependable, and accountable
  • A demonstrated interest and commitment to gun violence prevention and public health
  • Strong attention to detail for reviewing and editing written materials to ensure accuracy and brand consistency
