This has been a year unlike any other. The coronavirus pandemic upended life as we knew it, closing schools and workplaces and prohibiting large gatherings. These restrictions were designed to help slow the spread of COVID-19. But they have done nothing to slow the spread of mass shootings.
There were 553 mass shootings in the first 315 days of 2020. For perspective, with almost two months left in the year, there have already been 32 percent more mass shootings this year than occurred in all of 2019. There have been more mass shootings this year than any other year since the Gun Violence Archive started tracking data in 2013.
Very few of these shootings have made headlines, but they are devastating communities, especially BIPOC communities, across the country every day. Only seven states have not yet seen a mass shooting this year.
Can you let us know where you stand on the record-high number of mass shootings this year?
