The Alliance For Gun Responsibility Statement on former President Trump’s Announcement of Sen. JD Vance as running mate for the 2024 election

Trump Elevates a Senator who puts gun industry profits over the safety of the American people.

SEATTLE, WA— Yesterday, former President Donald Trump announced Senator J.D. Vance as his running mate for the 2024 election. In response to this announcement, Alliance for Gun Responsibility issued the following statement:

“This election is a pivotal moment for our country. The selection of J.D. Vance as Donald Trump’s running mate reinforces the dangerous anti-gun safety stance that has plagued our nation for far too long. We must stand united in electing leaders who are committed to protecting our communities from gun violence,” said Renée Hopkins, CEO of Alliance for Gun Responsibility. “A potential White House led by Donald Trump and J.D. Vance would endanger more children and families by increasing the risk of gun violence in America. They have repeatedly shown that they prioritize the interests of the gun lobby over the safety and well-being of our communities and are completely out of touch and wrong when it comes to gun violence prevention.”

“We don’t have to guess when it comes to Senator J.D. Vance’s track record on gun safety – he’s made it quite clear where he stands. Since his election, Senator Vance has stood against measures that would close deadly loopholes in our background check system and has openly opposed vital gun safety legislation that saves lives, like the bump stock ban after the tragic Las Vegas shooting. His rhetoric and voting record demonstrate a clear disregard for the urgent need to address the epidemic of gun violence in our country,” said Dylan O’Connor, Government Affairs Director of Alliance for Gun Responsibility.

Senator JD Vance has a history of opposition to common-sense measures to promote gun safety.

  • J.D. Vance believes that neither expanding background checks nor Red Flag laws will solve the problem of gun violence.
  • He opposed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and supported arming teachers in classrooms.
  • Senator Vance has called gun violence “fake problems” and efforts to address it “a huge distraction.”
  • The NRA spent nearly $500,000 supporting the NRA-endorsed, A-rated candidate’s 2022 Senate campaign.
  • Vance advocated for abolishing the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF).
