Statement on Mass Shooting in Orlando
Early this morning a gunman entered a popular Orlando LGBT nightclub and opened fire killing 50 patrons and injuring dozens more, making this the deadliest mass shooting incident n the U.S. to date.
Regardless of the shooter’s motives, we know one thing for certain, that he was an angry young man who should not have had easy access to firearms.
“Our hearts break for the survivors, for the victims and their families, and for the LGBT community in Orlando. They deserve more than our ‘thoughts and prayers,’ they deserve to live in a country that values their lives enough to take decisive action to stop gun violence,” said Alliance for Gun Responsibility Executive Director, Renee Hopkins. “On average, there is a mass shooting every single day in America. And our elected officials who continue to stand with the gun lobby are standing against the American people. They have a responsibility to keep people safe, and every day that they refuse to take action, people will die. As we call on our leaders to support life-saving laws, we remember that today dozens of families are living through their worst possible nightmares. We stand with them.”
