USA Today Supports Initiative 1491
The editorial board of USA Today has voiced support for Initiative 1491:
Voters in several states — from California to Maine — will get a chance on Nov. 8 to do what weak-kneed members of Congress, cowed by the gun lobby, have refused to do: Approve sensible measures that could help prevent the gun violence that kills 92 Americans each day in murders, suicides and accidents.
. . .
Other firearms measures on the ballot next month include one in Washington state to give family members, who often know best when a relative’s mental condition is deteriorating, a new avenue to separate that person from guns. Families, roommates and police could seek an “extreme risk protection order” from a court to temporarily take the individual’s guns away. To prevent false claims, it would be a crime to file with “intentionally false information.”
. . .
If voters agree, their communities will be safer, and they will have sent an important message to Washington.
