The Seattle Times reports:

An increasing number of Washingtonians who fail background checks while trying to buy a gun have been seeking handguns, according to a decade of government data.

Most of those who failed background checks for any type of gun have done so because they had been convicted of a crime punishable by more than a year in prison, according to FBI data. Last year, 1,526 people in Washington were denied a gun for that reason.

The next-biggest group of denials in 2013 consisted of people convicted of domestic- violence misdemeanor crimes or who had restraining or protection orders against them related to domestic violence.
