STATEMENT OF INITIATIVE 594 SPONSOR CHERYL STUMBO REGARDING NEED FOR ACTION TO PREVENT GUN VIOLENCE
Initiative Sponsor, Jewish Federation Survivor Calls on State to Pass Commonsense Reforms to State Gun Laws
Need for Action Clear Following Recent Gun Violence Affecting All Corners of Seattle, Washington State
(Seattle, WA) – The Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility issued the following statement from Cheryl Stumbo, Initiative 594 citizen-sponsor and survivor of the Jewish Federation shooting in 2006, in the wake of the Seattle Pacific University shooting, the recent double murder in Leschi, and other recent gun violence incidents in Seattle and Washington State:
“I know all too well what the SPU community is feeling. You think that a tragedy like this won’t happen to you – until it does. Yesterday’s shooting at Seattle Pacific University is the most recent reminder of how gun violence can rock a community to its core. In the last decade, virtually every neighborhood and every community in Seattle and our State has been touched by gun violence tragedies. Richard Martinez, the father of a student killed at UCSB, urged that we should say to ourselves, ‘Not. One. More’. Here in Washington, it is long past time to pass commonsense reforms to our State’s gun laws so that we can prevent future tragedies and curb gun violence. In November, Washington State has a chance to stand up and say ‘Not One More’ by passing Initiative 594 to help keep guns out of the hands of criminals and other dangerous people.”
