Seattle PI: Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords to speak in Olympia for gun background checks

Former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, severely wounded in a 2011 mass shooting, will testify Tuesday in support of Washington Initiative 594, which would require criminal background checks of those purchasing firearms at gun shows or on-line.
Giffords and her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, will speak to a House Judiciary Committee hearing in Olympia at 1:30 p.m.
Giffords was holding an outdoor town meeting at a Tucson mall when assassin Jared Lee Loughner opened fire, killing six people (including U.S. District Judge John Roll, and a 9-year-old bystander) and wounding 13 others.
