“Born out of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre of first graders, the movement has drawn a bead on the Gun Lobby. It has passed initiatives in 2014, 2016 and 2018, after the Legislature refused to act. Last year, for the first time, Washington voters elected what Alliance CEO Renee Hopkins called ‘a gun violence prevention majority in Olympia.’ Ten bills were passed, and $1 million appropriated for research on gun violence at the University of Washington and Harborview. The NRA, meanwhile, has gone through a time of troubles. It put no money into legislative races here last fall, in contrast to the 1990’s, when it spent millions to defeat a safe-storage initiative.”
