Capitol Hill Times: I-594 gun control initiative gaining
The Capitol Hill Times reports:
The language of both I-594 and the communications materials of the WAGR focuses on the desire to make legal access to firearms more difficult for people convicted of violent crimes and those deemed by a court of law a danger to themselves or others due to mental illness. It has been speculated that Joel Reuter, the 28-year-old mentally ill Capitol Hill man who died in a shootout with police in July, acquired the gun that he used on the day of his death through current loopholes.
Today, the WAGR is on the cusp of getting I-594 on the 2014 ballot. Early in October, the group delivered approximately 250,000 of the required 325,000 signatures gathered over the past several months to the Secretary of State’s office in Olympia. Around 75,000 of those signatures were deemed invalid, so the effort to replace them is ongoing. The WAGR has until January 3, 2014 to acquire the remaining valid signatures.
