Alliance For Gun Responsibility Releases 2020 Legislative Agenda

Following the most successful session in the organization’s history, the Alliance proposes more opportunities for lifesaving legislative action

SEATTLE, WA – The Alliance for Gun Responsibility released its 2020 legislative agenda today. Following the passage of ten gun responsibility priority bills during the 2019 legislative session, the Alliance’s 2020 agenda is an aggressive roadmap for the Washington State Legislature to help keep our communities safe from gun violence.

“Nearly every day brings yet another report of a senseless act of gun violence and yet another reminder of the urgency of our work,” said Renée Hopkins, CEO of the Alliance for Gun Responsibility. “This week it was shootings in Santa Clarita, San Diego, and Fresno. Before that it was news of an avowed neo-Nazi preparing for a race war in Snohomish County.

“We have made tremendous progress in recent years enacting commonsense gun safety policies in Washington state, and there is still more work to close deadly loopholes, keep guns out of dangerous hands, and ensure our current laws are effectively implemented. Our 2020 legislative agenda outlines crucial policies that will save lives in our state. We are counting on our gun responsibility majority in Olympia to continue prioritizing gun violence prevention and keeping our communities safe.”

The agenda includes a broad range of policies from funding for community-based programs to further strengthening of our protection order system to new restrictions on lethal firearms accessories. Highlights include:

  • Restricting access to high-capacity magazines
  • Requiring background checks for ammunition sales
  • Addressing the intersection of alcohol abuse and gun violence
  • Keeping our communities safe by restoring local authority to limit firearms in crowded public events or places like parks and libraries where our kids play and learn
